This documentary-style novel traces the everyday lives of Chinese immigrants in Seattle during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through stories of family, art, food, memory, and cultural identity, the book captures how ordinary people navigated an extraordinary moment in history. At its heart, it is also a story of women’s growth and self-discovery.
Seattle Under Thick Clouds has been collected by the libraries of several research universities on the East and West Coasts of the United States as a primary source on the Chinese immigrant experience and urban memory, for academic research and teaching. In the order in which the collections were confirmed, these institutions are Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, UCLA, UPenn and UW.

I Stand Among Ten Thousand Stories: An America You May Not Know draws on the author’s experiences as a graduate student in Austin, Texas. Through the contrasting emotional journeys of two female friends from Turkey and Iran, the novel explores life in America through the lenses of education, work, and parenting. Its stories touch on family relationships, everyday life, children, friendship, workplace politics, university life, start-ups, and even encounters with the university administration after getting into trouble.
